Digital Preservation and Archiving Policy
Continuity of the Scholarly Record
Digital Preservation and Archiving Policy
IJESGE is committed to maintaining the long-term accessibility, authenticity and integrity of its published scholarly content.
Policy statement
The International Journal of Education and Skills for the Green Economy treats published articles as part of the permanent scholarly record. The journal applies technical, administrative and organizational measures intended to protect its content against accidental loss, technical failure, unauthorized alteration and platform discontinuity.
Digital preservation is distinct from ordinary website hosting. Its purpose is to ensure that published material remains identifiable, authentic and recoverable over the long term.
Preservation objectives
Long-term access
Maintain continued access to published articles, supplementary files and their bibliographic records.
File integrity
Protect published files against accidental corruption, unauthorized modification and incomplete transfer.
Record authenticity
Preserve the relationship between each article, its authors, publication history, metadata and formal notices.
Recoverability
Maintain sufficient copies and recovery procedures to restore content following a technical failure.
Preservation framework
The journal’s preservation approach combines platform-level management, scheduled backups, preservation of publication files and metadata, persistent identifiers, repository-based distribution and recovery planning.
Materials preserved
Platform records
The journal manages submissions, editorial records, publication files and metadata through the Open Journal Systems platform.
Backup copies
Website files, uploaded materials, system configuration and database records are included in scheduled technical backup procedures.
External distribution
Metadata and published content may also be distributed through repositories, indexing services and scholarly discovery systems.
Backup principles
The journal’s technical backup arrangements are guided by the following principles:
- Backups should be created at regular intervals;
- Database records and publication files should be preserved together;
- At least one backup copy should be maintained separately from the active website;
- Access to backup copies should be restricted to authorized personnel;
- Recovery procedures should be tested periodically;
- Obsolete backup copies should be disposed of securely when no longer required.
Persistent identifiers
Where assigned, Digital Object Identifiers and other persistent identifiers are included in article metadata and citations to support stable identification and linking.
A persistent identifier supports discovery and citation but does not replace the need for independent file preservation, reliable metadata and technical backups.
Metadata preservation
Preservation includes both article files and descriptive metadata. Metadata may contain:
- Article title and abstract;
- Author names, affiliations and identifiers;
- Keywords and subject information;
- Publication date, volume and issue;
- DOI and official article URL;
- Copyright and licensing information;
- Corrections, retractions and other publication-history notices.
File formats
The journal seeks to use widely supported and accessible publication formats. When technological change makes an existing format obsolete, files may be migrated or converted while preserving the content, bibliographic identity and relationship to the official published record.
Author self-archiving
Authors may preserve and distribute permitted versions of their work through:
- Institutional repositories;
- Disciplinary or general-purpose repositories;
- Academic research profiles;
- Personal academic websites;
- Funders’ designated repositories.
Archived copies should acknowledge IJESGE as the original place of publication and include the DOI or official article URL whenever available.
Post-publication changes
Corrections, expressions of concern and retractions are preserved as part of the article’s publication history. The original article record and the relevant notice will be linked so that readers can understand the status of the publication.
Journal discontinuation
If IJESGE ceases active publication, reasonable measures will be taken to maintain access to previously published articles and their metadata through the journal platform, institutional custody or an appropriate preservation service.
Discontinuation of new publication must not result in intentional deletion of the existing scholarly record.
Preservation responsibility
The journal and its supporting institutions share responsibility for maintaining suitable technical and administrative arrangements for the continuity of published content. Preservation practices will be reviewed as the journal and relevant technologies develop.
